Catching Fire at the Latest Movie Club

This month saw the latest gathering of the Student Movie Club at the Spectrum Playhouse on Friday, April 11th. For those unfamiliar with the Student Movie Club, gatherings consist of the screening of a movie (with snacks and water on sale), followed by a discussion on the themes of the screened movie, all lead by CIP’s theatrical teacher Kyle Goldman. This is only the second gathering of the club this semester, as technical problems lead to the cancellation of the “Ender’s Game” screening planned for March.

This month’s movie was “Catching Fire”, the second installment in “The Hunger Games” series. The first two acts of this film focuses on the franchise’s lead heroine, Katniss Everdeen, dealing with the pressures of becoming a pseudo-celebrity after the surviving the Hunger Games in the previous film, and then the third act revolves around her participation in the next installment of the Hunger Games.

The discussion after the film’s screening revolved around the idea of self-sacrifice, especially the kind Katniss resorts to to help her allies in the film’s climatic Hunger Games. While I can’t say whether I would perform such self-sacrifice, I can say that the film was very enjoyable, and I look forward to next month’s meeting of the Movie Club, in which a film voted on my the students will be screened.
